It’s amazing how a small gesture of God’s love for a stranger can not only change that stranger’s life, but also touch the people that saw this act of kindness happen in real time. A couple of weeks ago, when I was stopped at a red light, on a freeway off-ramp, there was a homeless man standing at the corner with a sign. It was hard to make out what the sign said, since the cold rain was coming down hard, but I assume it said something in the vain of, “ Need money” or “Need Food”. I felt sad for the man, but then simply looked away and waited for the light to turn green. When the light finally turned the car in front of me didn’t move. I instantly grew impatient and gave a light tap on my horn. Still, the car did not move. Then suddenly the driver’s door opened and a man stepped out into the cold rain. The driver slowly walked over to the homeless man and the two of them looked as if they were having a conversation. Then something amazing happened. The driver took off his very nice leather jacket that he was wearing and gave it to the homeless man. The homeless man didn’t hesitate. He grabbed it and put it on. Then the two of them began to hug each other. The hug must have lasted for a good 30 seconds. After their long embrace was over, the driver, now drenched and coatless, got back into his car and drove away.
It’s amazing how something as simple as this moment can change even a believer’s life. The sad thing is that I know that some of us get so caught up in our own lives that we forget what God’s love even looks like. And sometimes some of us need a moment like this to remember that God’s Love is all around us. I know that I was one of those people. I would love to hear how you see God’s love in your lives. Please share your stories and I hope my true encounter with God’s love will encourage you.
