“We have worked with Premier probably
since their inception,” Decker said. “I
remember when Roy (Morgan – one of Premier’s
founders) was first starting out. We’ve been
working together since the beginning.”
The two group’s common goals have
built a lasting and fruitful relationship that glorifies
God, encourages believers and attracts people from
all walks of life.
“Ultimately, we have the same
goals – giving people a means to worship and
be encouraged through music, concerts and events.
We meet people where they are. Our mission is to edify,
unify and build up our listeners and even for evangelism,
and I’m sure that’s part of Premier’s
mission as well.”
WBFJ is an advertisement-free, listener
supported radio, which has endeared the station to
the hearts of people in the community. Imbedded and
embraced by the local community, WBFJ reaches out
across the Triad area into at least six major cities.
The live internet broadcast WBFJLIVE is an increasingly
popular way for the station’s outreach to expand.
On the long-range frontier, WBFJ has
raised funding and partnered with a sister station
in Russia, a task that has taken nearly a year to
achieve. Although the necessary funding has been given,
the sister station is still waiting and praying for
license approval, Decker said.
On the home front, WBFJ joined with
SONICFLOOd and Hanes Mall in sponsoring the Tsunami
Relief Concert on Jan. 29.
“We’re all cognizant of
the need that’s there,” Decker said. “Everyone
wants to do something to help and we wanted to help
give people an avenue for that.”
The station will be celebrating Valentine’s
Day once again in an unusual way. Steering away from
the romantic side of the season, they are joining
Meals on Wheels and Senior Services to offer the “Valentine’s
Sweetheart Surprise.” They are asking listeners
to make at least 3,000 Valentines that will be delivered
to shut-ins - people who are unable to leave their
homes because of sickness, age or disability.

Q. Tell us about your new album. What
do you think it says about where you are right now
in life - your focus, direction, dreams or desires?
A. This album was the first time that
I let myself truly be seen. I was able to write on
every song of the record and be fully involved in
the recording process. It was not only a great experience
to start writing so much, but it was also sort of
therapeutic to me. During the making of this record,
I was learning more about God in my life than I ever
had before through hard times and through the victories
that followed those times. I hope and pray that the
songs speak to people in some way that they would
find God the way I did when I wrote them.
Q. How did you get involved in the "True
Love Waits" effort? Why do you think that is
worthwhile or needed today?
A. Being a young Christian girl, I did
not grow up sheltered. I am fully aware of the temptation
and peer pressure that is right in front of our faces.
I love to be a part of something that is not just
"against" something, but that is "for"
something. I think that our culture gets so caught
up in what NOT to do, that they forget what they are
standing for. I am part of this effort because I believe
that sexuality is not a bad thing. It's a gift from
God and it should be beautiful but the only way it
is beautiful is if it is used for what it was meant
for. God clearly told us that it is for two people
who are joined as one in marriage and that is all
there is to it.
Q. Are you looking forward to the upcoming
Music Boat 2005 cruise? What are you most excited
about? What do you think is unique about a contemporary
Christian music cruise?
A. Let's see … the sun, a boat,
my closet friends and great music … I'm pretty
sure that I am looking forward to that! I actually
just found out who will be performing and it turns
out that some of my closest friends will be on the
cruise. I am very excited about that.
The idea of a Christian music cruise is very unique.
Most people go on cruises wanting to relax and escape
from the pressures and stresses of life. I think that
is a reasonable expectation and it would be great
as long as you are on vacation. But when you make
God and worship a consistent part of your day, you
are allowing your soul to be filled and that will
last longer than any vacation you could take.
Q. How is Winter Jam 2005 going? Have
you seen God working through these concerts? If so,
in what ways?
A. Winter Jam has been great! It feels
like I'm on a road trip with friends and I get to
see a great concert every time. I just love to see
so many different kinds of people - young and old
- all come to the same show. It just goes to show
that when God is in the music, He speaks. And even
some "punk rocker dude" is totally moved
by a NewSong worship song. That's beautiful to me.
Q. What else is God doing in your life
right now?
A. Lately I have been learning how to
give up control. With the New Year and everything,
we all start trying to set goals and resolutions for
the year to come, and then we go set off to try to
accomplish them, and we wonder why we can't stick
to them.
I realized that I am trying to do all these things
in my own power and forgetting to let God be that
power in me. It's so cool because for the first time
I am reading the Word and it becomes an actual strength
inside of me, when before it only felt like good advice.
Q. If you could describe your life right
now in one word, what would that be?
A. ENOUGH.
